What to look for at the Tower of London

Few buildings have played a more pivotal role in London’s history than its Tower. Boasting a millenium’s worth of treacherous tales and host to the exquisite Crown Jewels, it survives as one of the UK’s most popular tourist attractions. Keep an eye out for these…

Ravens
Fun fact: If the ravens ever leave the Tower then it’ll fall down! OK, perhaps “fact” isn’t the word, but these birds are so important that they even have a designated guard!

Beefeaters
The Tower of London guards are commonly known as Beefeaters, and they’re more guides than guards these days. Call them Yeoman Warders instead of preferential treatment!

Crown Jewels
The Jewel House boasts the monarchy’s most exquisite treasures, including the Imperial Crown. Admission is included with your Tower of London ticket.

Execution site
Despite the Tower’s grisly reputation, there were relatively few executions. Most of the heads rolled on Tower Hill to the north, where the old scaffold site is commemorated.

Insider tips

How to get there?

Near Tower Bridge, the Tower of London’s nearest Tube station is Tower Hill on the District and Circle lines. It can also be reached by taking the DLR to Tower Gateway.

How long to visit?

There are 12 acres and a lot to see within the walls of the Tower of London. History buffs could easily spend a full day there! Although you could feasibly rush through it in three hours, we’d recommend setting aside at least six to do an official Beefeater tour. Some areas, such as the chapel, can’t be accessed any other way!

Good to know

When should I visit?

9:00AM to 5:30PM in the high season (March 1st through October 31st), 9:00AM to 4:30PM in the low season (November 1st through February 28th). On Sundays and Mondays, it’s open from 10:00AM.

How to get there

The District and Circle lines on the Tube, as well as the DLR, lead to Tower Hill and Tower Gateway stations respectively.

Is it expensive?

Entry tickets are around £22.

What people are saying about Tower of London

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Protesters & rain but still great thanks to Shane
Protesters in London caused all Tour Buses lots of problems on our trip. But the staff that greeted us at The Aldwych were professional and efficient. Once the bus arrived Shane took over and he was fantastic. What a great asset to your company. He apologized many times for events that were totally out of his control (protesters/diversions) We were on the bus much longer than we intended and missed a few things due to the diversions. The weather changed in an instant from blue skies and sunshine to heavy rain but my friends and I stayed put with Shane on the top deck, he stood up throughout. He entertained with great information and humor and even played “Its Raining Men” for us when we were totally soaked. He apologized again & kept us informed when he got off it was so very different. We could not really hear Luke and didn’t actually see him – he sat somewhere but we didn’t know where. It was disappointing that our £34 each trip was so badly disrupted but Shane made it great fun!

Tower of London and Tower Bridge VIP Early-Access Tour reviewed by MARIANNE

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Definitely worth going early to see the Yeoman & Guards 🙂
I would’ve preferred more time to look around the Tower but understood that we need to get to the “Changing of the guards” by 11 am. Our guide, Gavin was wonderful and made it really enjoyable!

Early Access Tower of London, Royal Walking Tour & Cruise reviewed by Sharon

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spent seven hours wandering and loved it!
My girlfriend and I bought tickets for Saturday and my plane ended up landing late, the trains were delayed and tracks were closed, but they were nice enough to let us use our tickets the next day rather than let us in 45 minutes to close! We ended up spending 7 hours wandering around the next day. Dress for the weather because much of it is wandering outside on the battlements looking at architecture. We bought the multimedia guide and the tours were interesting and self-paced. We learned a whole rich history where before we’d only known little bits. We ate fish and chips in the Royal Armouries Cafe (delicious.) Plan to spend the whole day at the Tower of London!
