Hamburg

Elbe and Alster Lake, the historic Town Hall, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District with Chilehaus, the nightlife on the famous Reeperbahn and the traditional Hamburg fish market shape the image of Hamburg, Germany’s green city on the waterfront. The HafenCity offers modern architecture and the new landmark, the concert hall Elphilharmonie Hamburg. In Hamburg prestige, elegance and modernity are combined to a globally unique atmosphere.

Top Things to Do in Hamburg

Thanks to centuries of sea trade, the vibrant city of Hamburg offers an unparalleled wealth and variety of culture. Stay a weekend, stay a week – you’re sure to fall for its irresistible charm.

    St. Pauli
Don’t let St. Pauli’s skull and crossbones flag deter you. This traditionally working-class neighborhood is now one of Hamburg’s most culturally diverse and vibrant areas.

    Reeperbahn
Also known as the “most sinful mile,” the Reeperbahn is Hamburg’s infamous red-light district. Nowadays it’s a bustling and highly popular locale, home to the city’s best nightlife.

    Hamburg Dungeon
Discover the dark side of Hamburg’s history on a fun and interactive tour – but be warned, the Hamburg Dungeon is not for the faint of heart!

    Alster Lakes
These two beautiful lakes surrounded by parks are ideal for a break. Have a picnic, jog along the water, or take a boat out. At Alster Lakes, you’ll forget that you’re in the middle of a city.

    Hamburg Harbor
The Port of Hamburg has an important economic role in the city and is still today one of the busiest ports worldwide. Take a stroll along Germany’s “Gateway to the World” gorgeous historic harbor and top it off with a snack from the famous fish market.

    Harbor Piers (Landungsbruecken)
Stroll along the Landungsbruecken to watch the ships come and go, then hop on a ferry and enjoy an inexpensive and picturesque ride across the waters en route to your next destination.

    Planning Your Hamburg Visit

    Save Money on Transport

If you plan on discovering the many sides of Hamburg, it’s really worth getting bundle transport tickets. Different deals are available depending on the length of your stay and you’re sure to save a lot of money rather than buying singles each time. Also, these tickets give you access to the ferries, which are the cheapest way of admiring the city from the water.

    Wait for the Spring

Hamburg is infamous for its grey, cold winters. If you can, it’s best to plan your visit between April and September. Once the weather improves, the city truly transforms – moods soar, streetside cafés fill up, and the parks and lakes once again become bustling hang-out spots.

Eat Like a Local Without Breaking the Bank

Known for its gigantic portions and very reasonable prices, the restaurant Erika’s Eck near the Schlachthof has been a favorite for locals and tourists alike for over 30 years now. This is the perfect spot to feast on some original German grub and if you’re out on the town, come here after midnight for its famous €1 sandwiches – available until 9am!

What people are saying about Hamburg

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great experience with exceptional guide!
Our group of 9 people took the St. Pauli tour at 23 o’clock on a Friday night. All of us were very excited, and I would definitely recommend. Our guide, Kai, was exceptional! He was truely a local and gave us an honest and very inspiring impression of the city. We ended up in an area full of bars perfect for continuing our night out. Thank you Kai, for a great experience!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Fun, and different sightseeing, with a very dedicated guide
A guided tour, which turned out to be a lot of good fun. A different way of seeing other parts of Hamburg, which you may not be inclined to see as a first choice. A very forthcoming and dedicated guide. This tour will make you smile- highly recommendable!!

Hamburg: Sightseeing Tour with ‘Scuddy’ reviewed by Kirsten

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent content and presentation. Both Guides were knowledgeable.
It was really excellent that we could split the two activities over two days, as there was no time left to do the boat trip when we got back from the hop-on-hop-off bus trip. We tend to use the bus as one trip, in order to gain an overview of the whole city. We rarely tend to use the bus more than once. Hamburg was great and the bus was great too.

Hamburg Combo: Hop On Hop Off & Water Ticket / Harbor Cruise reviewed by Jürg

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tour matched ad. Boat has toilets. Guide has accent, understandable.
The staff was friendly and helpful, and the tour was as described in the ads. There were toilets on the boat, which was quite convenient. The English-speaking tour guide was a German man with a German accent, not a native speaker of English. His English was reasonably good. The loudspeaker was a loudspeaker, meaning it had a bit of static or distortion, although it wasn’t bad as loudspeakers go. The combination made the narration a bit difficult for some people in our group to understand. I didn’t have trouble with it, but I have a lot of experience with German accents. Still, having a tour in English was very nice.
