Imperial Architecture

Vienna’s imperial grandeur is the legacy of the powerful Habsburg monarchy. Their home for more than six centuries, the Hofburg palace complex, incorporates the Burgkapelle (Imperial Chapel), where the Vienna Boys’ Choir sings Sunday Mass, and the famed Spanish Riding School, where Lipizzaner stallions perform elegant equine ballet, along with a trove of museums, including in the chandeliered Kaiserappartements (Imperial Apartments). Other immense palaces include the baroque Schloss Belvedere and the Habsburgs’ 1441-room summer residence, Schloss Schönbrunn, while 19th-century splendours such as the neo-Gothic Rathaus (City Hall) line the magnificent Ringstrasse encircling the Innere Stadt (inner city).

Planning Your Vienna Visit

How many days?

You could see the sights of Vienna in three or four days but, if you can, it’s worth booking longer in order to fully experience its exhibitions, concerts, and highbrow cultural life!

How to get around?

Vienna’s public transport network is excellent. With buses, trams, trains, and relatively new metro lines, hiring a car will be more hassle than it’s worth! Taxis are affordable and the city’s bicycle friendly too, so consider renting two wheels for your stay if you’ve got the legs for it!

What people are saying about Vienna

★★★★★ Sam was a great guide, saw all of inner city and had a blast!

Sam was a good teacher: had my spouse up and running for 1st time on a segway in 30 seconds at 65 y.o. Saw a lot of Vienna in 3 hours which included a nice and needed coffee break and got to know our guide better and get questions answered. Loved it! So much fun!!

Vienna: City Segway Tour reviewed by Janet

★★★★★ Well researched guide with an extensive knowledge of the time period.

Very personable guide who also had an appropriate yet dry sense of humor, which is a delicate balance in a tour such as this.

★★★★★ Excellent museum. E-ticket has to be printed out

Large variety of item: classical paintings, Egyptian objects, mummies, sculptures, section about fake elements in history. In addition there is currently an exhibition that I did not visit about Vermeer. Price on this site is a bit higher than at the museum but allows you to skip the line. However, there was an issue with using the e-ticket because it had to be printed out. So I had to email it to them to print it then enter the museum

★★★★★ Great Wine Tour in the Beautiful Wachau Valley

Our tour guide, Grant provided a clear overview of the arrangements for the day. If you sit on the top of the train there's great views of the villages and countryside. The bikes are good quality and there are a range of sizes to suit all. The majority of the tour uses cycle lanes, so there is very little cycling completed on the roads. The pace of the ride was perfect and relaxed. Enjoyable cycling through the vineyards and villages. It's nice having the tour guide provide information about the wine and areas at the two wineries, with no pressure to buy any wine. It was a very informal and enjoyable day.
