What to see at the 9/11 Memorial

The 9/11 Memorial is a place where you can learn about the terrible events of September 11th, 2001, and reflect on what it means to you – either as an American, or as an international visitor. What are some of the points not to be missed?

Twin Reflecting Pools
Two one-acre pools, with the biggest artificial waterfalls in North America, stand exactly where the Twin Towers were. The names of those who died are listed on the pool walls.

Facing Crisis: America Under Attack
This film examines the day’s events, compiling interviews with prominent figures such as George W. Bush. It runs daily every half hour, lasting for about a quarter of an hour.

Survivor Tree
This callery pear tree amazingly survived the downfall of the buildings. It was restored and is now a symbol of rebirth. Its seedlings are donated each year to communities in need.

Foundation Hall
This huge room contains one of the original, surviving walls of the World Trade Center as well as the Last Column, standing at 36 feet and decorated with recovered remnants.

Insider tips

When should I go?

The outdoors parts are probably best experienced when the city is not covered in snow. Summer is of course tourist season, so note that it will be more crowded then.

How should I behave?

Be as quiet and respectful as possible, as some visitors – including those who knew victims – will want to use it as a place to quietly reflect.

Can I bring children?

The exhibitions may not be appropriate for children under the age of 10 – especially if they are liable to make a lot of noise.

Good to know

When should I visit?

Open daily, 7:30AM to 9:00PM.

How to get there

The memorial is in Lower Manhattan and is easily reachable by foot from nearby hotels, or various subway stations.

Is it expensive?

The memorial is free to visit, but the museum carries an entrance fee.

Will I need a guide?

It will definitely help. Might be worth it to check out these best-selling tours.

What people are saying about 9/11 Memorial

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A comprehensive, thoughtful presentation of 9/11
Visually easy to follow. Artifacts were not too crowded and many were viewed in context with photos. The parts showing the original building foundation were remarkable and do insightful.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This tour is a definite must for anyone going to the 9/11 Memorial.
There should have been 6 people on the tour, but although my husband and I were the only ones that turned up, the tour still went ahead at the scheduled time. Our guide, Jon White, was extremely friendly and open to all the questions that we asked. He gave us so much more information than we could ever have found out for ourselves, which included details about the whole World Trade Center site, not just the area where the twin towers once stood. We had a full 2 hours with Jon, and the tour finished at the One World Observatory. The views from the top of the tower were spectacular, made even better by the fact that it was a beautiful, clear and sunny day.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worth it if you’re committed to doing a lot of things!
We found the pass to be worth it when we added up the costs of what we did and what it would have cost to do them by paying separately. The pdf information the pass provided on the 100 included attractions was most helpful and maybe we could have gotten that from other sources but it worked out well for us to plan our itinerary from the list of things the pass would pay for. Not all of our activities that we did in NY were covered, but that still was OK. You need to calculate how much you think you’re going to do on your trip to determine if it’s good for you. We did not feel like we were running all over to do things to make it worth it, but we were busy most days all day long.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely no wait to experience a truly amazing museum!
I cannot say enough about the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. It is inspiring, heartbreaking, a truly profound experience. Needless to say, the lines can become overwhelming. Booking through Trip Tour Guide made the experience quite simple, allowing us to focus on our visit. I highly recommend Get Your Guide. We have used their services in NY, London, and Glasgow. Looking forward to using them in other cities as well!
