Planning Your St. Petersburg Visit

Getting around

The St. Petersburg Metro is a good way to get around the city, particularly in winter, when it can be bitingly cold. Tickets are available at the stations from the toll booths, and a smart card that you can top up is the easiest option if you’re staying more than a couple of days.

Do I need a visa?

Most international visitors to Russia will need a visa, so check well before you travel and apply early to avoid disappointment.

What is the weather like?

It’s said the weather in this city has character – in others words, be prepared. By Russian standards, it doesn’t get too cold – never really below minus 10 degrees – and in the summer highs can reach 30 degrees. However, a jacket and umbrella are always handy to have in your luggage!

What people are saying about St. Petersburg

★★★★★ Great tour guide and great place to visit!

I would highly recommend visiting Catherine Palace! TJ Travel was easy to book through and everything was as advertised. Eleana was a fantastic guide with great knowledge of the location as well as the history of Russia. 10/10 recommend

★★★★★ Tim was warm, hugely informative with the lightest of touches.

The 3 hours passed so quickly, we left deeply satisfied with the delight, wonder and enrichment we had experienced. Tim was a first class guide: friendly, full of fascinating insights into the amazing things we were seeing and charming. The variety was breathtaking, from a sumptuous gilded palace, through some of the world's greatest paintings to a perfectly preserved mummy from thousands of years ago.

★★★★★ Great experience with tour guide Alexander!

I’ve had a lovely experience visiting the city of Pushkin! The tour guide was excellent, he (Alexander) had a great knowledge about the St. Petersburg and specifically about the Cathrine Palace. He explained everything in detail fluently. I really enjoyed it! Also, on the way going to Pushkin, he gave us a great information about the city and it’s major buildings. Moreover, the mini bus was clean and comfortable. Highly recommended!
